AMOXYCILLIN 150 LA

Suspension for injection

COMPOSITION

Amoxycillin base trihydrate eq. 150 mg/ ml amoxycillin

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Amoxycillin is a semi-synthetic broad-spectrum penicillin. It inhibits the peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. Amoxycillin shows a batericidal effect in a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative baceteria. Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, most Proteus types and penicillinase-forming Staphylococci are resistant. With E. coli there is a also a high level of resistance. Resistance is primarily based on the destruction of the antibiotic by β-lactamase, which is primarily mediated by plasmids, but could also be chromosomal. Intramuscular administration results in a plasma concentration-time profile with two peaks. Compared to the conventional formulation drug absorption was delayed and the elimination was slower.

INDICATIONS

For the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria susceptible to amoxycillin.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

Do not use in animals with a history of hypersensitivity towards penicillins and cephalosporins.

Do not use in small rodents (guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits) since amoxycillin may cause fatal colitis in these species.

Administer by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection in dogs and cats and by intramuscular injection in cattle, sheep and pigs:

7.5 to 15 mg of amoxycillin/ kg b.w/ day or 0.5 to 1 ml AMOXYCILLIN 150 LA per 10 kg b.w./ day.

The dose may be repeated if necessary. A dose interval of 36-48 hours is recommended.
