COMPOSITION

Clindamycin hydrochloride eq. with 200 mg clindamycin per tablet.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Clindamycin possesses an antimicrobial spectrum similar to that of lincomycin, but has a higher activity against anaerobes. Clindamycin is active against aerobic species such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Actinomyces, Nocardia, Mycoplasma and Toxoplasma. The anaerobic spectrum of activity includes Bacteroides fragilis, Fusobacterium spp., Peptostreptococcus spp. and Clostridium perfringens.

INDICATIONS

Dogs:

  • Clindamycin is indicated for the treatment of infected wounds, abscesses and infections of the mouth and teeth caused by or associated with Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Bacteroides spp., Fusobacterium necrophum and Clostridium perfringens.
  • Clindamycin is also indicated for the treatment of osteomyelitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Clindamycin can also be used as an aid for anti-microbial protection during dental surgery.

Cats:

  • Clindamycin is indicated for the treatment of infected wounds, abscesses and infections of the mouth and teeth caused by bacteria sensitive to clindamycine.
  • Clindamycin can also be used as an aid for anti-microbial protection during dental surgery.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

Clindamycin is contra-indicated in animals hypersensitive towards clindamycin or lincomycin containing drugs.áNot to be used in rabbits, hamsters, guinea-pigs, horses, ruminating animals and chinchillasábecause of possible gastro-intestinal side effects.

DOSAGE AND MODE OF ADMINISTRATION

Oral administration

Dogs and Cats:

Infected wounds, abscesses: 5.5 mg/kg b.w. (1 tablet per 36 kg) twice daily for 7 days.

Infected mouth, teeth: 5.5 mg/ kg b.w. (1 tabletáper 36 kg) twice daily for 10 days.

Duration: maximally 28 days depending on the clinical cause. As an aid for anti-microbial protection during dental surgery: 10 days treatment with 5.5 mg/kg twice daily is recommended. This treatment should be started 5 days prior to surgery until 5 days afterwards.

Dogs:

Osteomyelitis:

Orally: 11 mg/ kg twice daily (2 tablets per 36 kg b.w.). Duration: minimally 28 days. Treatment should be stopped when no results are observed within 14 days.

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS

Clindamycin sometimes causes overgrowth of non-sensitive organisms such as certain clostridia and yeasts. In case of these superinfections, necessary measures need to be takenádepending on the clinical situation. Vomiting and diarrhoea were seldomly seen.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR USE AND WARNINGS

Clindamycin was shown to have neuromuscular blocking properties that might increase mechanism of action of neuromuscular blocking drugs. Care should be taken when these substances are administered concomitantly with clindamycin.
