Suspension for injection

Penicillin G Benzathine 150,000 IU/ml

Penicillin G Procaine 150,000 IU/ml

Excipientsáad 1 ml

Benzylpenicillin or penicillin G is a beta-lactam antibiotic, active against most commonly occurring Gram-positive cocci and bacilli, Gram-negative cocci, Gram-positive and Gram-negative anaerobes. It is also moderately active against some Gram-negative aerobes, such as Pasturella multocida, Haemophilus spp. and Actinobacillus and shows good in vitro activity against Leptospiren spp.

Following injection of penicillin G a high initial penicillin plasma concentration is reached. The more slowly absorbed benzathine penicillin G provides a prolonged therapeutic plasma level for about 72 hours. Penicillin G is almost completely eliminated as unchanged by the kidneys. Minor amounts are excreted in bile, saliva and milk.

Infections caused by organisms susceptible to penicillin G, such as:

Cattle: pneumonia (Shipping fever), mastitis (Str. dysgalactiae, Str. uberis and penicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus), pyelonephritis, polyarthritis in calves, foot rot.

Pigs: bronchopneumonia, erysiphelas, Str. suis meningitis.

Horses: tetanus, streptococcal infections (strangles, polyarthritis in foals).

Dogs, cats: tetanus, leptospirosis, wound infections, pneumonia secondary to distemper infection.

Hypersensitivity to penicillin and/ or procaine.

Do not administer to rodents.

Shake well before use.

For intramuscular injection only.

12000-18000 IU/kg b.w. in large animals and 30000 IU/kg b.w. in pets.

Horses, cattle, adult pigs: 1ml/ 20kg bodyweight

Growing pigs, calves, sheep, goats: 1ml/10kg bodyweight

Dogs, cats: 0.5ml/5kg bodyweight

This dosage can be repeated after 48 hours when necessary.

Allergic reactions (anaphylactic shock, urticaria, edema) may occur in animals hypersensitive to penicillines, cephalosporins and procaine (antidote: corticosteroids, adrenaline, antihistaminics).

Acute side- effects reported after intramuscular use probably may be attributed to the procaine moiety of the antibiotic (nervous stimulation in horses, shivering, vomiting, pyrexia and abortion in pigs) or to inadvertant intravascular injection (embolic shock, procaine toxicity). Local reactions (soreness, edema) occasionally may occur at the site of injection.

To avoid accidental intravascular injection of the suspension, it is advised toáaspirate before administration.

100ml and 250ml multidose vials.
