Powder for injection

Isometamidium chloride HCl 125 mg

Excipients up to 245g

Isometamidium is a phenanthridinium compound, with antitrypanosomal activity. The primary mechanism of action is the blockade of nucleic acid synthesis. Following intramuscular administration, isometamidium is absorbed at a very slow rate and over a prolonged period, such that high amounts of the drug are found at the injection site even after 6 weeks. This is attributed to its strong binding to tissue macromolecules and its ability to precipitate tissue proteins resulting in inflammation and coagulative necrosis at the injection site.

Prevention and treatment of trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma vivax, T. congolense, T. brucei and T. evansi in cattle, sheep, goats, horses, dogs, camels and dromedaries. Preventative dosage ensures protection for 2-4 months. When clinical cases occur the whole group should be treated.

Hypersensitivity to the actute substance or to any of the excipients. Subcutaneous injection is contra-indicated.

Preparation of the solution for injection:

Dissolve the content of one sachet of ANCOMIDIUM in 6ml of sterile water for injection to prepare a 2% solution.

Dissolve the content of a sachet in 12ml of water for injection to prepare a 1% solution.

Boiled and cooled as well as distilled water may be used when sterile water for injection is not avilable. Once dissolved, the solution is to be used immediately. It can be stored cool (below 15 degrees centigrade) in waterproof containers for 24-48 hours.

Mode of administration:

Deep intramuscular injection, preferably in the middle third of the neck in large amimals. If more than 10ml is to be injected, the total volume should be divided over two injection sites, one on each side of the neck. Avoid accidental subcutaneous injection. Be sure that the syringe is completely empty before retracting it from the intramuscular injection site. Apply firm pressure on the injection site to prevent leaking. Sheep and goats are injected deep in the muscles of the thigh. Camels are injected VERY SLOWLY intravenously.

Cattle, sheep, goats: Treatment: 0.25-0.5mg/kg I.M. Prevention: 0.5-1mg/kg I.M.

Camels, dromedaries: 0.5-0.75mg/kg I.M. as a 0.25-1% solution slowly by I.V.

Horses: 0.5mg/kg by deep I.M. injection

Dogs: 1mg/kg I.M.

One sachet is sufficient for the preventative treatment of 1 animal or the curative treatment of 2 animals, weighing 250kg each.

Frequency of preventative treatment:

Repeated injections are needed at intervals of 10 to 12 weeks or more depending on the level of fly challenge.

Local irritation at the injectionásite may occur. Therefore deep IM injection is required.

Avoid leakage of the product into the subcutaneous tissues.

If more than 10ml is to be injected, the total volume should be divided over two injection sites.

Individual sensitivity to the product is possible.

Box with 10 sachets.
