ANCOMYCIN 200 LA

COMPOSITION

Oxytetracycline, (as hydrochloride) 200 mg/ml

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Oxytetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic indicated for use in the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections sensitive to oxytetracycline. These include Streptococcus, Anthrax, Pasturella, Salmonella, Clostridium, E. coli, Corynebacterium and Erysipelas. It is also effective against some Mycoplasma, Rickettsia and Prototoa. After intramuscular injection maximum plasma levels are quickly achieved and maintained for 3-5 days. Oxytetracycline is excreted predominantly by the kidneys.

INDICATIONS

ANCOMYCIN 200 LA is indicated against infections caused by oxytetracycline sensitive germs, such as:

- Pigs: treatment and prophylaxis of respiratory tract infections (enzootic pneumonia, atrophic rhinitis, infections by Pasturella, Haemophilus spp.), and Mastitis-Metritis-Agalactia syndrome (MMA) in sows.

- Cattle: treatment and prevention of respiratory tract infections, foot-rot, otitis media.

- Sheep, goats: treatment of respiratory tract infections, foot-rot, navel ill.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

Hypersensitivity towards tetracyclines.

Severe kidney and/ or liver insufficiencies.

Not for use in animals suffering from renal or hepatic damage.

ANCOMYCIN 200 LA is not recommended for use in horses, dogs and cats.

DOSAGE AND MODE OF ADMINISTRATION

The recommended dosage rate is 20 mg/kg bodyweight (1 ml per 10 kg bodyweight) applied by deep intramuscular injection.

Divide and inject at more than one site if dose exceeds:

Cattle: 20 ml

Pigs: 10 ml

Sheep, goats: 5 ml

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS

General toxicity is low, although collapse has been reported with tetracycline in weaks and debilitated animals.

In general ANCOMYCIN 200 LA is well tolerated, occasionally a slight reaction of a transient nature has been observed.

Oxytetracycline therapy rarely may cause anaphylactic or other allergic reactions (treatment: antihistaminica and/ or corticosteriods).

Use of the drug may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Irritation at the injection site only seldom occurs with this preparation.

Too rapid intravenous injection may cause cardiovascular collapse.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

General toxicity is low although collapse has been reported with tetracycline in weak and debilitated animals.

The use of tetracycline during the period of tooth development, including late pregnancy, may lead to tooth discolouration.

If concurrent treatment is administered use a separate injection site.

ANCOMYCIN 200 LA is not recommended for use in horses, dogs and cats.

Do not dilute.

30 ml, 100 ml and 250 ml multi dose vials.
