COTRIM 720W

Water dispersible powder

COMPOSITION

Trimethoprim 120 mg/g

Sulphadiazine (as sodium) 600mg/g

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

COTRIM 720W is a combination trimethoprim and sulfadiazine in the form of the water soluble salt, at a 1:5 ratio. Trimethoprim is a pyrimidine derivate with a bacteriostatic activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative germs. Sulfadiazine is aáfast acting bacteriostatic sulfonamide with an antibacterial spectrum that complies with that of trimethoprim. As both ingredients influence two successive reactions of the same bacterial biochemical process, one can expect that resistance development against the combination arises much slower than against the separate components.

Trimethoprim and sulfadiazine show the same pharmacokinetic pattern. Trimethoprim has a larger distribution volume and concentrates itself better in the tissues than sulfadiazine.

INDICATIONS

For the prevention and treatment of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Bordetella, Corynebacterium, E. coli, Haemophilus, Klebsiella, Pasteurella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, salmonella and secdondary bacterial infections associated with viral respiratory disease and mycoplasmosis. In sows COTRIM 720W can be used for the treatment of mastitis-metritus-agalactica (MMA) of bacterial origin.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

COTRIM 720W is contra-indicated in animals with a known hypersensitivity against sulfonamides.

DOSAGE AND MODE OF ADMINISTRATION

15-30 g of combined trimethoprim and sulphadiazine per kilo bodyweight acheived by adding:

- Sows: 1.80 kg COTRIM 720 W per ton of finished feed for 3 days prior to parturition and for 2 days after.

In high ambient temperatures, when water consumption is increased, the level of inclusion of COTRIM 720W should be reduced accordingly. Medicated water should be used within 24 hours.
