PENSTREP 20/20 LA

Suspension for injection

COMPOSITION

Penicillin G procaine 120.000 I.U. – Penicillin G benzathine 80.000 I.U. – Dihydrostreptomycine 200 mg base – Excipient up to 1 ml.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Benzylpenicillin shows a marked bacteriocidal action against most commonly occurringá Gram-positive cocci, bacilli and anaerobes, and also against some Gram-negative germs (e.g. Actinobacillus, Haemophilius, Leptospiren, some Pasturella strains, anaerobes such as Fusobacterium and Bacteroides.) By use of the procaine salt of penicillin G, a high initial penicillin blood level is achieved. The more slowly absorbed benzathine salt provides a prolonged therapeutical blood level for 72 hours.

DHS is an aminoglycoside antibiotic predominantly active against Gram-negative cocci and bacilli, and also against some Gram-positive bacteria (e.g. Staph, aures and Mycobacterium).

The combination of DHS and penicillin provides a bacterial synergistic action with a broad spectrum.

INDICATIONS

Prevention and treatment of infections caused by penicillin G and/or DHS susceptible microorganisms such as respiratory tract infections (shipping fever, bronchopneumonias, upper respiratory tract infections), uro-genital tract infections (e.g. pyelonephitis by Corynebacterium renale, endometritis), infections of the skin and wounds, streptococci infections in horses (strangles, Str. zooepidemicus infections in foals), erysipelas in pigs, panaritium, necrobacillosis in calves and piglets, anaerobe infections (clostridial infections, tetanus, anthrax), polyarthritis (navel ill), mastitis, septicemias, bacterial infections secondary to viral ones.

The drug can also be used in post operative prevention of infections.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

Do not administer to animals know to be hypersensitive to one of the components.

Renal insufficiency.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Cattle: 5-10 ml of PENSTREP 20/20 LA per 100 kg of body weight.

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS

Allergic reactions may occur in animals hypersensitive towards penicillines, cephalosporines and aminoglycosides (antidote: corticosteroids and/ or antihistaminica).

Procaine may seldom cause abortion in sows or nervous reactions in pigs.

Massive doses of dihydrosptretomycin may cause neuromuscular block particularly after accidental I.V. or intraperitoneal injection. Anaesthetics and muscle relaxants potentiate these effects.

Prolonged administration of high dose may lead to deafness, vestiblotoxic (ataxia, incoordination, nystagmus) and nephrotoxic signs.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR USE AND WARNINGS

In order to avoid intravenous administration, it is advisable to aspirate before injecting intramuscularly.
