Suspension for Injection

Penicillin G Procaine 200,000 iu – Dihydrostreptomycin sulphate 200 mg/ ml

Benzylpenicillin or penicillin G is a beta-lactam antibiotic and is mainly active against Gram-positive bacteria, anaerobes, spriochaetes and some Gram-negative bacteria. It is a rapid bactericidal acting antibiotic. The action is based on the inhibition of an enzyme. the transpeptidase, interfering in the synthesis of the cell wall of the bacteria.

Species usually sensitive: Streptococcus spp., Diplococcus spp., staphylococci not producing penicillinase, Corynebacterium spp., Actinomyces pyogenes, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus anthracis, Clostridium spp., Neisseria spp., Haemophilus spp., Leptospiren spp., Brachycephala hyodysenteriae, Fusobacterium spp., Bacteroides spp., some Pasturella-strains.

By application of the procaine salt a depot-effect is created, and as a consequence, at the recommended dosage, the antibacterial acting blood levels persist for 15á to 24 hours. It crosses the placenta barrier (particularly in case of infection) and is detectable in the milk. It is almost completely excreted via the kidneys (60-80% under the active form).

Dihydrostreptomycin is an antibiotic of the aminoglycosides group. It reduces bacterial protein synthesis at the 30S-subunit of the ribosomes. It is a rapid acting, bactericide antibiotic, mainly active against Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli, Klebsiella spp., Salmonella spp., Actinobacillus spp., Shigella spp., Pasturella spp., and some Gram-postive bacteria such as Mycobacteria, Bacillus anthracis, and some Staphylococci, Leptospira spp. and some Mycoplasmas.

After intramuscular application the dihydrostreptomycin sulphate is well and rapidly resorbed with maximal serum levels after approx. 30 minutes and antibacterial active levels persisting for 8 to 12 hours. It is mainly distributed over the extracellular areas and is excreted for 70-90% in the active form by the kidneys.

The combination of both antibiotics possesses a broad spectrum, which can be of particular importance in the treatment of mixed infections.

Treatment and prevention of infections caused by Gram-positive and/ or Gram-negative microorganisms sensitive to penicillin and/or dihydrostreptomycin, like respiratory infections (rhinitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, pneumonia), urogenital infections (nephritis, pyelonephitis, cystitis, metritis), peritonitis, wound infections, polyarthritis and septicaemia.

Do not administer to animals known to be hypersensitive to one of the components.

Renal insufficiency.

By intramuscular injection, subcutaneous or interperitoneal injection only.

POSOLOGY: 1 ml PENSTREP 20/20 per 20 kg body weight daily.

Administer daily for 3 consecutive days.

Use vial within 28 days of first withdrawal.

Maximum dose per injection site: 20 ml for horses, cattle and camels, 10 ml for pigs, 5 ml for calves, sheep, dogs and cats.

Reactions of hypersensitivity (urticaria, edema, anaphylactic shock with eventual collapse and death) can occur.

Acute toxic reactions (central stimulation) and a haemolytic anaemia are reported with horses.

Dihydrostreptomycin can induce secondary nephrotoxic and ototoxic reactions, in general in cases of prolonged therapy and high doses.

Intravenous administration can induce acute toxic reactions, even fatal (embolic shock, excitation, convulsions).

In order to avoid intravenous administration, it is advisable to aspirate before injecting intramuscularly.

100 ml and 250 ml multi-dose vials.
